Hello, I’m Monika Andriesse-Targiel, a professional artist based in Oostkapelle, Zeeland, the Netherlands.

I create contemporary paintings and mixed-media works exploring nature, light, texture, memory and the space between the visible and the intangible.

My work is not intended to reproduce reality literally. Instead, I seek to capture the emotional impression of a moment — its atmosphere, feeling and presence — and give it a lasting form.

I hold a Master of Fine Arts and studied painting and the visual arts at academies in Poland and Italy, including a period of study in Italy through a scholarship. My professional background in interior design continues to influence the way I create and understand art.

I see a painting not simply as an image on a wall, but as something that can shape the atmosphere, character and emotional experience of a space.

Alongside my original artworks, available to discover in the Gallery, I offer art-placement services, including in-home viewing and private atelier visits. I also create selected tailor-made artworks, developed to complement the dimensions, colour palette and character of a particular space.

      Why I Paint

      I paint because some experiences cannot fully be expressed through words. Through art, I seek to give lasting form to the deeper emotions and moments that move us profoundly.

      Throughout my life, I have experienced profound change, loss and the need to begin again. Surviving a near-death experience also deeply changed the way I see life — and my understanding of what is temporary, what remains, and what we carry within us.

      I have experienced the impermanence of the material world, while also becoming deeply aware of the lasting power of emotions such as love, peace, gratitude and hope. Through my art, I seek to preserve these experiences and give them a tangible, lasting form.

      I do not paint simply to reproduce what I see.

      I paint to translate what I feel when I experience the world around me — to preserve impressions of calm, awe, hope, faith, gratitude, space and openness, and to allow these qualities to become part of each artwork.

      Living beside the sea in Zeeland has deepened this connection. The water is constantly changing, the light shifts, the horizon disappears and returns, and the skies can transform within moments. I find something deeply human in this constant movement and transformation.

      For me, painting is a form of listening — a quiet process of observing, feeling and allowing something unexpected to emerge.

      Perhaps this is why I paint: to turn experience into something visible, to give shape to what cannot always be spoken, and to create a moment of stillness and safety in an otherwise constantly changing world.
